The spread of buy-now-pay-later schemes in Indonesian e-commerce lets young consumers buy goods before they have the cash. Shopee PayLater is among the most widely used of these schemes, and students are a major user group. This study examines whether the use of Shopee PayLater influences consumptive behavior among students of the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business (FEBI), UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu, and whether an Islamic economic perspective, reflected in honesty, justice, trustworthiness, and responsibility, mediates that relationship. A quantitative survey was conducted in 2026. Questionnaires were completed by 94 active students who had used Shopee PayLater at least once, selected through simple random sampling, and the data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling in SmartPLS 4. The measurement model satisfied the criteria for convergent validity and reliability. The results show that PayLater use has a positive and significant effect on consumptive behavior (β = 0.370; p = 0.029) and on the Islamic economic perspective (β = 0.599; p < 0.001). However, the Islamic economic perspective does not significantly affect consumptive behavior (β = 0.168; p = 0.317), and the indirect effect is not significant (β = 0.101; p = 0.328), so mediation is not supported. PayLater therefore appears to shape consumptive behavior directly rather than through students' Islamic economic orientation. These findings suggest that familiarity with Islamic consumption principles does not automatically translate into restrained spending. Universities and users are encouraged to pair sharia-based education with practical self-control and budgeting skills.
