Abstract

Introducing financial literacy in elementary school is important for building responsible financial behavior, including the habit of saving. However, children who understand the benefits of saving do not necessarily apply it consistently. This study aims to understand how elementary school children experience, interpret, and practice saving after taking part in the "Celengan Ceria" educational program in Sei Bamban Village, Batang Serangan District, Langkat Regency. The study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation involving 20 children aged 7–11 years. The results show that most children understand the meaning and benefits of saving, but their practice is still irregular because their savings are often taken back to buy snacks or items they want. Children's saving experiences are related to their saving goals, their consideration of needs versus wants, and the influence of family and the social environment. The "Celengan Ceria" activity served as an enjoyable initial experience that helped children understand how to save, but it cannot yet be confirmed to build a long-term saving habit. Child financial education programs should be complemented by continued guidance from parents and teachers.
