Transparency in sales contracts and the right of khiyar are two muamalah instruments protecting customer welfare, yet prior research has focused mainly on online marketplaces and wholesale trade, leaving small grocery stores in traditional markets understudied. This study examines how contract transparency and khiyar are practiced at Toko Mapan, a household-staples store at Kedurus Market, Surabaya, and how both relate to customer maslahah. Ten purposively selected informants (the owner, eight customers in three groups, and a neighboring trader) were interviewed during 1–14 September 2026, with source-and-method triangulation. Prices were disclosed honestly, and defective goods could be exchanged immediately in-store or within 2×24 hours after purchase. The owner was directly observed handing damaged goods to a distributor; the distributor stated that replacement goods would be brought on the next visit without additional cost, but the subsequent replacement was not directly observed. In one observed exchange, an additional sachet was given to a customer. Assessed through four hifz al-mal indicators developed as an operational analytic tool for this study, the observed transactions generally supported customer maslahah within the store’s exchange policy, although one customer whose request exceeded the 2×24-hour limit could not exchange the item. Findings are limited to one store and cannot be generalized to traditional markets.
